Obituary for Robert D. Nelson

Robert Delane Nelson, age 77, entered eternal rest on
February 9, 2023. He was born May 19, 1945 to Dowd
and Mary Ethel Nelson (Moser) in Matthews, NC. Robert
graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in
Charlotte, NC with the class of 1963. In October 1964, at
the age of 19, he enlisted in the United States Army as a
76Z Supply Soldier. He offered his service to his country
for 22 years serving at multiple duty stations to include
Korea and Fort Riley, KS. As a proud and patriotic soldier,
he quickly rose in the ranks and was promoted above his
peers. During his time in service, Robert received the
National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal
with Bronze Star, Vietnam Campaign Award, Army
Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon with 4 devices,
Meritorious Service Award with Oak leaf, Army
Commendation Medal with 2 nd Oak leaf, 6 Good Conduct
Medals, and qualified Expert with his weapon, the M16
rifle. After years of exemplary service, Robert retired
from the US Army in January 1986 where he was the First
Sergeant of HHC Platoon, 1 st Infantry Division at Fort
Riley, KS.
In 1967 Robert married Patricia Wood, and to this union
two children were born: Robert Nelson II and Teresa
Nelson. They later divorced. In 1977, Robert married

Patsy Lamb and also had 2 children: Tonya Fisher and
Rebecca Allen. They later divorced.
Robert loved all things outdoors, especially hunting and
fishing. He loved coon hunting on his mules, especially
old “Pete.” Robert was an avid fisherman, and known to
always own a bird dog.
He was proceeded in death by his parents Dowd and
Mary Ethel Nelson, his twin brother Richard, his brother
J.L., and his sister Edith. He is survived by his beloved
dog and sidekick, Cindy; his sister Christy Ramee (Mike),
his son Robert Nelson II, his daughters Teresa Nelson,
Tonya Fisher (Laura), and Rebecca Allen (Tim Coleman), 9
grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
The family has chosen cremation as were Robert’s
wishes. A graveside service will be held at a later date.
His final resting place will be in Prairiedale Cemetery
north of Talmage, KS. In lieu of flowers, you may send
