Doreen Ellen Couture, 87, passed away on Thursday, May 13, 2021 in her home in Abilene, Kansas, after a short illness.

She was born March 31, 1934, to Roy and Naomi Ekstrom Nordquist on a farm near Agenda, Kansas.

She graduated from Clyde High School in 1952, and then worked as a telephone operator in Beloit.

On August 20, 1954, she married her high school sweetheart, Joe Couture. They made their homes in Clay Center, Lindsborg and Abilene.

Doreen worked as a daycare provider when her daughters were young, then worked at Whetstone Oil Company in Lindsborg, at the First United Methodist Church in Abilene, for the Dodson dental office, and with USD #435 where she retired as clerk of the school board. After retiring she worked as a receptionist for the businesses in North Town Center.

Doreen was a member of many organizations in her lifetime including, most recently, Dickinson County Retired School Personnel and United Methodist Women.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert Nordquist and her husband Joe.

Survivors include daughters Cheri’ Couture of Lenexa and Kathy (Tim) Horan of Abilene, grandchildren Robin (Nathan) Weatherman of Gladstone, Missouri, and Ryan Horan of Abilene, great-grandchildren Hayden Weatherman of Columbia, Missouri, Landon Weatherman of Gladstone, Missouri, and Teigan and Gemma Horan of Abilene.

At Doreen’s request, a private family gathering of celebration will be held at the Tim Horan residence in Abilene.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Joe and Doreen Couture Scholarship. This scholarship is presented every year to an Abilene High School graduate who has attended at least one year of college and is awarded in August.

Memorials may be dropped off or mailed to Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 N.W. Third Street, Abilene, Kansas 67410.

What a sweet lady she was. I wish I’d have the privilege of knowing her earlier, but blessed to have known her as long as I did.

What a wonderful lady she was! She was the glue of the district in so many ways when she worked for it. It was nice to get to see her with her beautiful smile at the retired school personnel group after my retirement. Doreen was a major part of the decorations at the meetings for many years. Her lovely presence will be missed by many.

I became acquainted with this amazing lady thru Joe and her caramels while working at the Eisenhower Center. She called me about painting her house and a couple years ago and then, this last year or so we have had many porch visits when I would, as she put it,” teach her taste buds some new secrets”. It didn’t matter if I stopped by with one surprise meal or more a week I could always plan on a personal had written special card in the mail. Her handwriting was beautiful just like her heart. I loved our short and sometimes long visits and will miss them and her kind soul. My thoughts are with her family and all who were lucky enough to know this beautiful lady.
