Obituary for Clarence M. Garten Jr.

Clarence M. Garten, Jr. passed away May 17, 2021 at the age of 94. Clarence was born October 26, 1926 in Abilene, KS. to Clarence M. Garten, Sr. and Marie Esther Sprinkel Garten. He attended Sand Springs School and graduated from Abilene High School in 1944.
Clarence was a 4-H member as a youth and as an adult was a leader and a 4-H Agent for Marion County. He was also a member of Rural Life. His occupation was a farmer/stockman. In 1957 he was Dickinson County Outstanding Farmer. He also took second place in Kansas Outstanding Farmer.
He was a member of the National Guard 1st Battalion, 137th Infantry Division and had an honorary discharge as a Corporal in 1952.
Clarence married Eileen Londene on September 11, 1949 at the First Methodist Church in Abilene, KS, and raised 5 children together. This year would be their 72nd year together.
He was a member of the Emmanuel Church in Abilene. He met the Lord at a Lay Witness Mission at age 43 and then he and Eileen coordinated Lay Witness Missions for 28 years. They helped establish the Abilene Good News bookstore. He also was the chairman of Abilene Area Revivals for 5 years. He was a member of the Gideons, lay minister of the Lord’s Chapel in Talmage, leader of Bible studies for youth and adults and involved in Dickinson County Jail Ministry from the late 1970’s-2017.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen, and children, Janette Fulton (Dennis) of Nampa, ID, Marsha Pavkov (Roger) of Salina, KS, Larry (Jean) of Olathe, KS, and Scott (Jamie) of Abilene, KS. He had 14 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.
Proceeding him in death were his parents Clarence and Marie, brother Frank and son Steven.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 pm. Friday, May 21, 2021 at the Emmanuel Church in Abilene, KS. There will be a cookie reception following the service for the family to visit with friends and family. There will be a visitation with the family on Thursday night May 20, 2021 at the Abilene Senior Center from 5-7 at 100 N Elm, Abilene.
