Obituary

Dr. Christopher “Chris” L. Southwick, age 64, of Abilene, KS, passed away doing what he loved on Monday, December 21, 2020. Dr. Southwick was born on January 12, 1956. Due to having a profound love of learning and education all his life, he had a professional background that was unsurpassed. Dr. Southwick attended Kansas State University for a degree in Pre-Medical Chemical Engineering before graduating from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1984. He then completed his residency in Anesthesiology at Western Reserve Care System in Youngstown, OH through 1987.
Dr. Southwick loved his family, his work, and his patients. Committing his life to helping those in need, he always remained humble and witty. Throughout his career, Dr. Southwick became licensed to practice medicine in nine states, including opening his own successful pain management practice in Northeastern Kansas. He had been a devout member and past-President of the American Society of Anesthesiologists since completing his residency, although the rest of his interests and affiliations were numerous and also highly prized.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kerry Southwick (Long) of Abilene, KS; his brother Patrick Southwick of Salina, KS, and his four children – Andrew Southwick of Denver, CO; Kylie (Southwick) Roach (Phillip) of Prairie Village, KS; Caitlin Southwick of Leawood, KS; Everett Southwick of Tampa, FL. He is preceded in death by his Mother, Father, and Sister. A private family visitation was held at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene, KS. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in the spring.

I have been seeing Dr. Southwick for quite a few years, since roughly 2010. We clicked right away and I believe he truly cares greatly about his patients. I had been in a terrible boating accident in 2002. I had had two back surgeries and so many procedures done on me and the pain never went away. He actually heard what I was saying and understood the traumatic experiences that I had already gone through. He listened to me and wanted to know what if anything had helped. We came up with a plan together and became friends along the way. When my daughter had several hip surgeries and her pain continued, never getting better, I knew exactly who to take her to see. Dr. Southwick examined her, asking questions all the while. He suggested that it was possible she had an autoimmune form of arthritis. It was confirmed through a rheumatologist. We both continued seeing him and enjoyed every visit. We are both so sorry for your loss.
Sincerely, Sherri and Makayla Bradley.

I was a patient of Dr. Southwick for 3 to 4 years, and I really liked him. He was thoughtful and caring. I appreciated all he done for me to help control the pain I suffer from. My condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.

He treated my friend of over 45 years for pain. Spoke to him a number of times over the last two years. He was a kind and insightful man, and a good doctor. His passing will be felt by the community. When someone good leaves our physical world, a empty space is left behind which only God can fill. Requiescat in Pace.
