Obituary for Melvin G Cox

Melvin G. Cox was born on May 26, 1929 in rural Abilene, Kansas, the son of Jessie G Cox and Arlene Swan Cox and departed his life on October 31, 2017 at Abilene Memorial Hospital, having attained the age of 88. He grew to manhood in the community of his birth and attended local schools and graduated from Abilene High School with the class of 1947. On September 6, 1953 he was united in marriage with Betty Ann Beemer at the New Basel United Church of Christ. They lived and farmed in the Rural Center Community. He was blessed with two sons, Steven and Monty. He worked for the Reynolds Livestock Auction for twelve years and the Farmers and Ranchers Livestock Company for sixteen years as a ring man. He also did some order cattle buying thru the years. He loved people and making new friends. He also enjoyed auctioneering for events, and family gatherings. It was not uncommon to hear him auctioneering in the fields as he worked the ground. Due to a back injury he turned the farm operation over to his son Steve and he and Betty Ann relocated to rural Carthage, MO. While there he enjoyed his cow/calf operation and antique business. He managed several antique booths in the Mall in Carthage, MO and enjoyed attending auctions and yard sales. He had a passion for restoring something old or broken into something useful. He is survived by his wife, Betty Ann of the home, one son, Steven and wife Laura, daughter-in-law Kelli Cox, grandchildren, Bridgette Standridge and husband Brian, grandsons Brett and Marcus Cox. Three brothers Gorden (LaDonna) of Salina, Douglas (Virginia) of Manhattan and Roger (Roseanne) of Abilene and other relatives, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Monty and his parents, Jessie and Arlene Cox. A Memorial Service for Melvin will be 11:00 A.M., Saturday, November 11, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church of Abilene with Pastors John and Jenny Collins Officiating. Family will receive friends Friday November 10, 2017 from 5:30 – 6:30 P.M., at the Church. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.
